A council chief has today admitted that Ayr’s Low Green may represent a “security risk” in a row over the installation of counter terrorism and traffic bollards.Jane Bradley, South Ayrshire Council’s Director of Communities and Transformation, says the local authority is acting "in partnership" with anti terrorism police by placing the huge bollards around Wellington Square and The Esplanade at Ayr Beach. However, the decision to install the barriers at strategic locations has been criticised by the town’s MSP, Siobhian Brown, who last week said she had ‘serious concerns’ about the surprise move.

Ms Brown also claimed she’d received complaints from constituents and businesses - and questioned the local authority over their lack of consultation with the public. However, the council has responded by claiming they have been working hand in hand with counter terrorism cops to “enhance public safety” at large-scale events.Ms Bradley said: “The Low Green is an ideal venue for large scale events which attract thousands of visitors.

The introduction of barriers is essential to mitigating the possibility of vehicles being used in attacks on the public.”The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now.Get all the local news in your area – plus features, football news and the latest on the coronavirus crisis – at your fingertips 24/7.The free download features the latest breaking news and exclusive stories while you can customise your page with the sections that matter to you.The Ayrshire Live app is available to download now on iOS and Android. The council, who host events at the Low
