Stockport County have paid tribute to former record-signing Neil Matthews following his death with cancer aged 56. Matthews played a key role in County's legendary 1990-91 season, scoring two goals in the club's final day 5-0 win over Scunthorpe that secured the club's first promotion in 20 years.
In a statement, the club said Matthews played a significant part in one of County's 'most important seasons' and helped 'pave the way for greatest period in the club's history'.
Injuries eventually restricted his playing time at Edgeley Park and he left the club in December 1992, having played 47 games and scoring 15 goals.
Matthews began his career with his hometown club Grimsby Town, making his league debut in 1984. He had loan spells at Scunthorpe and Bolton before signing for Halifax in 1987.
