Stephen Robinson admits he spent years trying to sign Alex Gogic – but ended up joining him at St Mirren instead. The Buddies boss recently described the Cypriot international as having been a “colossus” so far this season. The 29-year-old fans’ favourite has picked up a string of man-of-the-match awards and been a key part of the club’s Premiership success over the past two seasons. And Robinson finally got his man two years ago when he pitched up to replace Jim Goodwin at the SMiSA – three weeks after Gogic had already signed on loan from Edinburgh giants Hibernian. The manager said: “I tried to sign Alex when I was at Motherwell, when I was at Morecambe.

I’ve tried to sign him everywhere. He’s a fantastic footballer.“I saw him play in the middle of a back three at international level and he controlled the game.

He has been excellent there but we’ve had the luxury of being able to put him into midfield on occasion.“His attitude just epitomises everything we’re about, added with a lot of quality.

He just gets on with things.“There’s not many players like him and Marcus Fraser around any more. They are a dying breed with the society and players we’re producing.“He drives the dressing room here, he is a leader of men.
