St Cuthbert Wanderers produced a “fantastic” performance to progress in the Tweedie Cup. Goals from Idrissa Sarr and Owen Hall gave them a 2-0 victory over Lochmaben on Saturday.

Boss Ian Clark said: “The lads thoroughly deserved it and it probably should have been more. “It’s always performance over result with me but we were fantastic in the way we played football, the way we played out, the transitions, chances created and the way we defended. “It was a good performance all round, front to back. “I temper expectations as it’s just one win but the performance is what impressed me more than anything. “People are starting to understand how we can play and the confidence is there.” As well as being pleased with the all-round performance, Clark was impressed with two players making their first starts for the Kirkcudbright side.

He said: “Kalim Carruthers, who is 16, came on last week and impressed and he started on Saturday. He was involved in both goals – setting up the first and winning the penalty for the second. “He’s come through our youth academy.

He went away to Galloway Thistle for a couple of months because we didn’t have an age group for him but as soon as he turned 16 he chapped my door to say he could sign now, which is what you want. “He thoroughly deserved his start and followed it up with a fantastic performance. “Our goalie Danny Wether was also making his debut and kept a clean sheet.
