Police said that at around 3am, a white Audi A3 travelled against the flow of traffic, before hitting a Renault HGV. Detectives are investigating the circumstances surrounding the incident and have appealed for information.
Emergency services rushed to the scene near Lofthouse, but the male driver of the Audi was confirmed dead at the scene.
