Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse just got banned! The newest movie in the realm of the Spider-Man franchise was reportedly banned by the United Arab Emirates, and a reason why was revealed. Keep reading to find out more… According to Variety, the animated film, which was a sequel to 2018′s Into The Universe, will not be released in theaters after “failing to pass the country’s censorship requirements.” The reason it didn’t pass the requirements seems to be over one particular scene, which features a poster in the background that has a transgender flag on it.

The poster also reads “Protect Trans Lives”. Sources also pointed out that is just one of the reasons for the ban. Another reasons seems to be Gwen Stacy and the characters’ arc.

The outlet says that some fans are taking the representation of the character to be a trans-coded one. Her “dimension” is also represented by the colors of the transgender flag.

It’s important to note though that Gwen is not identified as transgender in the film. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is not the first film to be banned in that region.
