An SNP MP who survived skin cancer will attempt to introduce a bill to have VAT removed from sunscreen products of SPF 30 and above.Amy Callaghan has called for sunscreen to be treated as a necessity as "protecting your skin is not a luxury." She also wants an awareness campaign about how to protect yourself from the sun.The East Dunbartonshire MP was diagnosed with the skin cancer melanoma at the age of 19.
She had to have surgery on her face and relapsed at the age of 21. Callaghan has been cancer-free since 2014.She said it was "unacceptable" that sunscreen is treated like luxury items which incur VAT.
Certain medical products are exempt from the tax.Callaghan will have a 10 minute rule bill on removing VAT from sunscreen products in the House of Commons on February 23.
Callaghan will present her case to the house before MPs vote on whether the bill should be introduced. This follows a Westminster Hall debate which she lead on Thursday.Callaghan said: “Protecting your skin is not a luxury, so sunscreen products of SPF 30 and above should not be taxed like they’re luxury goods.
