A Scots university professor has told how he watched in horror as his family home in Gaza was destroyed during Israeli air strikes that were broadcast live on television.
Dr Mohammed Alshurafa thought his mum Abeer, 52, disabled dad Bahjat, 63, and youngest brother Amro, were still inside the residential building when it was hit by a rocket shortly after 3am on Sunday.
The 33-year-old, who is an assistant professor of accountancy at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh, desperately tried to raise his loved ones on the phone as he helplessly watched the Al Jazeera news coverage.Harrowing footage on the channel captured the moment the residential building was hit.
A bright orange flash can be seen lighting up the sky before erupting into thick, black plumes of smoke.The family were given a 10-minute warning to flee from their home before it was destroyed.
