Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has confirmed when the General Election will be held. The PM must call a general election by January 2025 and many have speculated if Sunak would grasp onto power until the last moment. But Sunak has now confirmed to journalists in a speech at No.10 that next year there will definitely be an election, quashing rumours that one will be held in January 2025.Mr Sunak has been under pressure to call a general election as he slopes behind Labour in the polls. But as recently as September, Mr Sunak insisted he can cling to power as he hinted he will delay holding a general election reports the Mirror. The PM said he was “fired up” and “hungry to win” as he revealed that he wants to remain in No10 until at least 2030.

The PM's words led to rumours he could push the election date back to 2025.There have been other reports that Tory strategists are said to have pencilled in October 31 as a date for the election.

This would be to allow the Conservatives enough time for the economy to recover, but not too long that they look despairing.Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the Daily Record team. All you have to do is click here if you're on mobile, select 'Join Community' and you're in!If you're on a desktop, simply scan the QR code above with your phone and click 'Join Community'.We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
