Plans are being made to remove more than 150 pylons between the Stewartry and Dumfries. SP Energy Networks (SPEN) is proposing to take down 44km worth of cable between the substation at Tongland and one in Dumfries.
A screening opinion for the proposal has been lodged with the council, with the firm arguing an environmental impact assessment is not required.
SPEN and local residents are currently awaiting the Scottish Government’s decision on the Kendoon-Tongland Reinforcement (KTR) project, which would see existing infrastructure taken down and new pylons put up.
Campaigners such as Galloway Without Pylons argue the new route should go underground, which SPEN say isn’t feasible. Following a public inquiry in 2022 and 2023, reporter Katrina Rice submitted her report to Scottish Ministers in early February but a decision has yet to be announced.
