Pet owners issued flea warning by vet as infestations can strike at any time of year

A vet has issued a warning to pet owners about the risk of flea infestations as they can happen all year round - not just during the summer months.

In the UK, there are around 62 different species of flea - the most common being the cat flea or Ctenocephalides felis. Flea eggs are nearly impossible to see with the naked eye, making it hard to deal with the problem when your pet gets infected.

They can also jump long distances, meaning they're easily able to move between your pets and your home. The pests can be a real nuisance, causing potential health issues to you and your pet, so it's vital that you're aware of the signs and solutions to tackle an infestation.

Jamie Walker, a vet and Technical Services Manager at global veterinary pharmaceuticals company Dechra, said: "Many owners only see fleas as being 'a summer thing' and aren't treating their pet for them this time of year.
