Perthshire pro-independence supporters and politicians are coming to terms with the Supreme Court’s ruling that the Scottish Government cannot hold an independence referendum without the UK Government’s consent.
Local Yes supporters in Perth said the ruling was “by no means the end of the road for the independence campaign”. First Minister Nicola Sturgeon wants to hold a referendum on October 19 next year but the court ruled unanimously that she does not have the power to do so, because the issue is reserved to Westminster.
And the UK Government has refused to grant formal consentLord Reed, Scotland’s most senior judge, also explained that he also rejected the Scottish government’s argument that any referendum would simply be “advisory” and would have no legal effect on the union, with people only being asked to give their opinion.
In the aftermath rallies were called across Scotland with Perth’s Horsecross Plaza the scene of a gathering of around 200 people.
