Judges on the UK Supreme Court will deliver their verdict on whether the Scottish Parliament can hold a second independence referendum without prior approval from the UK Government.The court will rule on whether the proposed Scottish Government's Independence Referendum Bill relates to "reserved matters" - meaning it is outwith Holyrood's competence.First Minister Nicola Sturgeon instructed the Lord Advocate, Scotland's highest legal officer, to refer the case to the court in London in an attempt to break the constitutional log-jam.

She wants to hold a vote next year but Westminster has rejected calls therefore the SNP leader asked the court to rule on the issue.

The SNP and Scottish Greens, both independence supporting parties, have a majority at Holyrood for breaking up the United Kingdom therefore they want to hold a referendum within this parliamentary term.Here's all you need to know ahead of the judgement later today: If judges on the Supreme Court give the SNP/Green Scottish Government consent to hold a second independence referendum then Sturgeon could proceed with plans to hold an advisory vote on October 19 next year.

Earlier this year the FM told MSPs that the vote would be "consultative, not self-executing, and would seek to ascertain the views of the Scottish people for or against independence".
