A spectacular Perseid meteor shower is set to dazzle the sky today, with one expert hailing it as one of the most dramatic displays of the year. The meteor shower, which will take place between 11 and 13 August, promises amateur astronomers a chance to see up to 100 shooting stars per hour.

This annual celestial event is the result of debris left behind by Comet Swift-Tuttle, which orbits our sun every 20 to 200 years and was last spotted in 1992 (and previously in 1862 and 1737).Although the shower will reach its peak this weekend, it will be active from 17 July to 24 August. With an average speed of around 36 miles per second, the Perseid meteors will create fast trails of vibrant colour across the night sky.

The Royal Observatory Greenwich has described the Perseid (pronounced Per-see-id) meteor shower as "one of the most dramatic things to see in the night sky between July and August," according to The Sun.

For the best viewing experience, stargazers are advised to watch the meteor shower when the sky is at its darkest, between midnight and 5.30 am, reports the Mirror.
