Opened: The time capsule hidden 150 years ago by a community in exile who made Manchester their home
manchestereveningnews.co.ukIt was discovered stashed inside a wall three years ago. Now it has finally given up its secrets. A glass jar, with a wax seal unbroken, was found by builders carrying out construction work at a new wing for Manchester's Jewish Museum in 2020.
It was a time capsule left when the building was beginning its first incarnation as the Sephardi Synagogue. Now 12 months before the 150th anniversary of the Grade II* listed Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue in Cheetham Hill, it has been opened.
Its contents will be the star exhibit at the anniversary celebrations, and will inspire the creation of new capsule for 2024.
The museum has prepared events, activities, and performances for all ages to discover more about the people, cultures and communities of Sephardi Manchester.
