New athletics track opens at Lanarkshire sports centre

Lanarkshire athletes now have a new sporting facility with the opening of a new four-lane running track as part of a leisure centre upgrade.The new 400m track at Airdrie leisure centre has been officially opened for use by local clubs, schools and community organisations.North Lanarkshire Council officials describe the new facility – which also includes a six-lane 100m sprint section plus high and long jump areas – as an “outstanding outdoor complex for training, events or recreational use”.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

It forms part of a £1.5 million upgrade to the sports centre’s facilities, with a Fifa-accredited 11-a-side football pitch in the centre of the track space having opened last November, along with a synthetic five-a-side kickabout area.

The project has also seen further improvements to the wider Airdrie centre, including plumbing, flooring and lighting upgrades to the team changing room and a revamp of the reception area including a fast-track entry system for members.
