The pioneering Afrobeat drummer, who played with both Fela Kuti and The Good, The Bad & The Queen, died in 2020 and the music had been in development for some time ahead of his passing.“I’ve been writing with Tony Allen, Fela Kuti’s drummer,” Philippakis told NME in 2017. “I started doing some tracks with him last year and then I was on tour.

Foals frontman Yannis Philippakis has spoken to NME about making his theatrical debut by penning the music for new play The Confessions, as well as his long-mooted project with the late Tony Allen.Having opened at London’s National Theatre last week before a press showing last night (October 23), The Confessions is an emotional, gut-wrenching and powerful play written and directed Alexander Zeldin – telling the story of his mother’s life across eight “tumultuous” decades across two continents and a series of complex relationships.Philippakis and Zeldin have known each other since their days at school, when they would sneak away to smoke together on a nearby riverbank. Speaking with NME, the artist explained how the director had “a reputation that preceded him a bit” as someone “ferociously intelligent, but with a naughty streak”.“We’ve just been in each other’s lives for a long time, but with differing orbits and different worlds,” Philippakis told NME.

Paramore have announced the artists that will be featured on their “almost remix” album, ‘Re: This Is Why’.The band have been teasing a release to coincide with the first anniversary of the album’s title track since last week. They confirmed the release of a companion piece to ‘This Is Why’, featuring remixes, reimaginings and rewritten tracks, as well as collaborations. Foals and DJ Rowena join Club NME re-launch with DJ sets
Foals and DJ Rowena have been announced to join the line-up of the return of Club NME – which will be headlined by Courteeners next month.The return of the iconic club night was revealed last week, with news that Manchester indie veterans Courteeners will be taking to the stage for the first instalment. It will be held at EartH Hall in Hackney, London on Friday September 15.Now, it has been confirmed that the night will also feature two very special guest DJ sets from both DJ Rowena and British indie rock icons Foals.Known as a prolific broadcaster, presenter and DJ, Rowena’s can currently be heard on BBC Three Counties Radio, as well as indie DJ duties at Propaganda and her own show on London’s Boogaloo Radio.Indie giants Foals will also be taking to the decks for the opening night of Club NME, with the members set to deliver their own DJ set.

Foals have teased new music as well as their plans for their upcoming Reading & Leeds set while at Lollapalooza 2023.While speaking to NME backstage at this year’s edition of Chicago’s famous music festival, Foals shared that they were working on some new music. Frontman Yannis Philippakis said: “We’ve got a song that is unfinished that we call ‘Tranquillity’, it’s not going to be called that in the future but we were all listening to it and vibing with it the other day.”He continued: “It was something we were writing and recording around the time of ‘Life Is Yours’ and it didn’t quite fit but it’s really exciting and is kind of the coolest thing we’ve ever written so we might try to finish that at some point.”The band also shared what they have coming up for their headlining set at Reading & Leeds later this month.“We’re getting chased for the setlist which feels a bit early since it’s a few weeks away,” said Philippakis.

Foals have announced the launch of their very own hot sauce, ‘Holy Fire Hot Honey’ – you can purchase the spicy condiment here.Released in collaboration with Sauce Shop, the limited edition hot honey drizzle is the brainchild of the Oxford band’s drummer Jack Bevan, who is a long-time hot sauce fan.Swapping the studio for the kitchen, Bevan devised a combination of sweet honey and habaneros before adding activated charcoal to make a unique dark elixir, “perfect for drizzling on pizzas, chicken wings, or anything else you fancy,” a press release reads.Speaking on his new sauce, the drummer said: “I’ve been a fan of Sauce Shop’s sauces for ages, so it only felt right to collaborate for Foals’ first-ever food launch. This is going to be a staple for me on our new tour and tastes amazing drizzled on anything!”The collaboration marks the band’s first foray into food products, with ‘Holy Fire Hot Honey’ set to be sold as part of the band’s official tour merchandise when Foals kick off their UK tour tonight (April 20) in Edinburgh.Run by Pam and James Digva, Sauce Shop is the UK-based creative condiment maker behind ‘Brussel Sprout Ketchup’ and ’12:51′ by Chef James Cochran’s Scotch Bonnet Chilli Jam.“We feel so lucky to collaborate with Jack on his hot sauce, we are huge Foals fans and are excited to see Holy Fire Hot Honey as part of the official band merchandise,” Pam said of their collaboration with Foals.

Foals have announced the acts that will support them on their upcoming UK tour – see the names below.The Oxford band will hit the road later this month, kicking things off in Edinburgh on April 20, with shows set to follow in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds, London, Brighton and more.Today (April 11), Yannis Philippakis and co. announced the six acts that will accompany them on the tour, with names including Shame, Goat Girl, Yard Act and Wet Leg.Shame, who released their second album ‘Drunk Tank Pink’ last year, will open for Foals on their four dates at London’s Olympia (April 29 and 30; May 1 and 2). Foals have been announced to headline Latitude Festival 2022 alongside Lewis Capaldi and Snow Patrol, frontman Yannis Philippakis has told NME of the band’s storied history with the Suffolk festival – and why they owe a lot to Latitude.Ahead of the release of new album ‘Life Is Yours’, the band will top the bill at the event for the second time this July, continuing a long and eventful relationship with Latitude.“The first time we played [in 2008] was memorable because we played in Spain the night before and had got caught up in a big fight the night before with Kele from Bloc Party and John Lydon,” Philippakis told NME referring back to whenKele Okereke accused the Sex Pistols frontman of a “racist attack” on him backstage at a festival, with Yannis and Kaiser Chiefs‘ Ricky Wilson stepping in.“I got handcuffed and a security guard put me in a neck lock and I blacked out,” Yannis remembered. “We flew in and then played Latitude for the first time on zero sleep.”A slightly less eventful second performance then came on the tour for second album ‘Total Life Forever’, though Yannis remembered the show being stopped due to crowd surges and pressure on the barrier.

Courteeners, English Teacher and Louis Tomlinson were among the acts to be honoured at the first-ever Northern Music Awards.The inaugural ceremony – hosted by the UK’s largest music therapy charity, Nordoff And Robbins – took place at the Albert Hall in Manchester last night (April 23) to celebrate northern artists, festivals, venues and industry figures.Presented by BBC Radio 6 Music DJ Chris Hawkins, the event featured live performances from Courteeners frontman Liam Fray, as well as English Teacher, Lisa Stansfield, The K’s and more.Guest presenters from the region included former Manchester United footballer Gary Neville, New Order‘s Gillian Gilbert and Stephen Norris, and Grimsby-born actor Thomas Turgoose (This Is England). ‌ Neville awarded Courteeners with the Band Of The Year prize.
