There are times when Jack Butland wishes Rabbi Matondo would just keep the noise down a little. But the Ibrox keeper reckons the reborn Rangers ace might just be the man to create the Champions League cacophony that drowns out next week’s Dutch din.
You’d hardly call the Welsh winger the quiet man of Ibrox, with his bubbly personality constantly chirping away in new team-mate Butland’s ear.
Matondo, though, has had to endure a muted start to life in Glasgow, with injury and a crisis of confidence silencing his bid to make himself a Rangers regular. However, the 22-year-old former Manchester City and Schalke speedster finally announced himself to the Light Blues legions on Wednesday night with a 23-minute cameo that had Ibrox turned all the way up to 11.
Bursting from the bench, he raced onto an inch-perfect Cyriel Dessers pass to put Michael Beale’s side 2-1 up against PSV Eindhoven after Abdallah Sima had earlier picked the perfect moment to crank up the volume with his own stunner just before half-time.If you thought the roar generated by Matondo’s effort was loud, it was would have been nothing on the ear-splitting crack he’d have produced had he found the top corner with an injury-time volley that whistled just over Walter Benitez’s bar.
