More than £50,000 is to be spent fixing dry rot in an iconic Stewartry building. Members of the council’s economy and resources committee heard about the problem in Castle Douglas clock tower at their meeting on Tuesday.

They agreed to allocate £56,000 to resolve the problem as part of the council’s property/buildings (other) asset class programme.

Councillors were also told that work to fix a similar problem at New Galloway Town Hall is nearing completion while next month work will begin on replacing heating and controls at Stewartry Museum in Kirkcudbright.

More than £4 million is due to be spent on projects across the region as part of the programme – but the report warned there are a number of potential issues, including the rising cost and availability of materials and the availability of contractors.
