Michael Beale will have to do something that only six managers have achieved in Scotland’s top flight in almost half a century if he is to bounce back from Rangers’ opening day defeat to lead the Light Blues to the Scottish Premiership title. In the last 43 years only half a dozen teams have suffered a loss in their first league fixture and gone on to lift the biggest domestic prize in the country.
That run kicked off with Alex Ferguson who guided Aberdeen to the league in 1979/80 and the most recent was Beale’s ex dug-out rival Ange Postecoglou a couple of years ago.Rangers have managed to do it just four times in the past 91 years.
Saturday’s defeat was the Ibrox side’s first opening day loss in the top flight for 25 years. And while on that that occasion they went on to win the league, the omens are not good for Rangers to mount a comeback and win the Premiership after already trailing Celtic by three points in the title race.
They've only managed to recover from losing their first league game of the season and go on to win the league on four occasions since season 1932/33 - 1977/78, 86/87, 89/90 and 98/99.
