Servette did what Rangers couldn’t ahead of their midweek meeting and summoned a last gasp equaliser to avoid domestic defeat. The Swiss side warmed up for the first instalment of their Champions League third round qualifier against Michael Beale’s men with a1-1 draw way to Stade Lausanne.
And it looked like Rene Weiler’s men were going to suffer the same fate as Beale’s team, who went down 1-0 to Kilmarnock in their first outing of the Scottish Premiership campaign. But there was late, late drama as the visitors salvaged a point at the death thanks to Patrick Pflucke’s free-kick in the sixth minute of stoppage time.
Alban Ajdini’s penalty in the 68th minute looked like being enough to beat a Servette side that made four changes from the one that went all the way to penalties against Genk on Wednesday with ten men.
But Pflucke’s last gasp leveller denied the newly promoted side a first victory of the Swiss Super League season. Euro heroes Timothe Cognat and Chris Bedia were named as subs to save their legs for Glasgow, but both were called upon to help get Servette back into the game, which they managed just in time.
