Manchester revealed as one of the UK's takeaway capitals as obesity rates soar

Despite rising obesity rates across the nation, the takeaway trade in the UK is booming - and our map shows which parts of the country enjoy tucking into fast food the most.

Since fish and chips were first popularised in the Victorian era, fast food eateries have become a familiar sight on the high street, offering a variety of convenient culinary delights originating from all over the world.

However, it is widely accepted that fast food is not the healthiest choice as fried foods are often high in saturated fat, while many takeaway options contain heavily processed meats and other ingredients.

In spite of this, people’s appetites for takeaways and fast food have only grown in recent years. In fact, business count data shows the number of takeaway food shops and mobile stands has increased by 23% in Greater Manchester since 2019, with around 485 new fast food stores opening by the end of 2022. Over a similar time period, the proportion of people in England with a BMI (Body Max Index) above 30, meaning they are obese, has increased from 24.4% of the adult population in 2019-20 to 25.9% last year; while the percentage of people who are at least overweight has crept up from 62.6% to 63.8%.
