A man is in hospital after police were called to the Manchester Ship Canal following concerns for welfare. Officers attended at Irlam Road in the early hours and brought the man to safety from the water.

today A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Police said: "On Saturday 28 October 2023 at around 2:40am, officers were called to reports of a concern for welfare of a man on Irlam Road in Trafford. "Officers attended the scene, and a male located a short time later at the Manchester Ship Canal where he was brought to safety by emergency services and remains in hospital with minor injuries." A spokesperson for Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service said: "At shortly before 3am today (Saturday 28 October) fire crews were called to Irlam Road, in Irlam, following reports of a person in the water.

Working alongside Greater Manchester Police, two fire engines from Stretford and Sale fire stations along with the Technical Response Unit from Leigh and the Water Incident Unit from Eccles quickly attended the scene. "Crews worked to assist the man from the water before he was assessed at the scene by North West Ambulance Service.
