Violence that ended with one man fighting for his life in hospital was the culmination of a year of 'torture' between neighbours over children playing football outside their homes, it has been claimed.

The victim, 54, remains in hospital after suffering life-threatening injuries during what police described as a 'disturbance' on Panfield Road in Wythenshawe on Sunday night.

A man, 33, and a woman, 42, have been arrested on suspicion of section 18 assault and remain in police custody. Residents say two families have been at loggerheads over children playing football on a green on Panfield Road.

On Sunday night, a brick was thrown at the front window of a home overlooking the green, prompting a confrontation in the street, it has been claimed.
