Manchester City chairman Khaldoon Al Mubarak has revealed Steph Houghton will become the first female player to have her achievements physically commemorated by the club.

The defender, who retired at the end of the season after 10 years at the Joie Stadium, is set to have a mosaic installed in her honour at City Women's new training facility and she will also have a training pitch dedicated to her at the City Football Academy.

Houghton is City's record appearance holder and led the Blues to their first Women's Super League (WSL) title in 2016. The former England captain has also featured 121 times for her country and has been at the forefront of the evolution of the women's game since making her debut for Sunderland in 2002. “Steph has been a tremendous leader for our club, for the team," Al Mubarak said this week in his annual Chairman's interview.
