A stretch of the M6 is set to remain closed for 'several hours' this afternoon after a serious crash. The northbound stretch of the motorway near junction 23 at Haydock has been fully closed after the crash between two HGVs and a car.

Traffic is also being temporarily held on the southbound side. An air ambulance has landed on the scene. Drivers have been urged to avoid the area while emergency services respond. The extent of any injuries has not yet been confirmed. A statement on the National Highways website said: "The M6 in Greater Manchester is closed northbound between J22 (Winwick) & J23 (Haydock Island) due to a serious road traffic collision involving 2 Heavy Goods Vehicles and a car. "North West Motorway Police Group, emergency services and Air Ambulance are in attendance and are being assisted by National Highways Traffic Officers.

The southbound carriageway is blocked while the Air Ambulance attends. "Traffic within the northbound closure is being turned around from the rear.
