Jessica Kiang Solid, stately and — like the collapsing Papal States of the Italian Peninsula in the late 1800s — just a little too tradition-bound for its own good, Marco Bellocchio’s “Kidnapped,” based on a 19th-century case of religious abduction, opens with an eavesdrop. Anna (Aurora Camatti), the Catholic servant to the Jewish Mortara family of Bologna, pauses on the stairs after a tryst and spies her employers, Momolo Mortara (Fausto Russo Alesi) and his wife Marianna (Barbara Ronchi), murmuring a blessing in Hebrew over their newborn baby boy. It is not clear yet why the sight should make her stop in her tracks, but over the course of over two sedate but mostly absorbing hours, the veteran director follows its repercussions with a singleminded, narrow dedication that sits strangely at odds with the film’s immaculately expansive production design.

Owen Gleiberman Chief Film Critic Aki Kaurismäki, the deadpan cockeyed minimalist of Finland, has become the ultimate illustration of the principle that if you make movies in the same mood and style, with the same monosyllabic bombed-out hipster vibe, for a period of 30 years, your movies may not have changed — but the world around them has, so the films will have a totally different effect. In “Fallen Leaves,” the Kaurismäki bauble that’s showing at Cannes this year, there’s actually a scene in which a character uses a computer. The film’s heroine, Ansa (Alma Pöysti), loses her job as a supermarket worker, and to find another gig she rents an HP laptop at a makeshift Internet café that charges 10 Euro for half an hour. Apart from that, the movie unfolds in that scruffy and sparsely decorated so-familiar-it’s-cozy pre-tech Kaurismäki zone, where people still use electric adding machines or listen to a bulky kitchen radio that looks like it’s from the early ’60s. “Fallen Leaves” is set in Helsinki, the capital of Finland, but to our eyes it’s a weirdly underpopulated place where shopping, as a pastime, doesn’t exist, and neither, in any meaningful way, does conversation.

The org, which was launched in April 2021 with support from Kate Capshaw and Steven Spielberg’s Righteous Persons Foundation, will distribute $490,000 among these independent films, all of which explore the vast and vibrant terrain of the Jewish storytelling space. The announcement coincides with Jewish American Heritage Month and a commitment from President Joe Biden’s White House administration to develop a national strategy to counter antisemitism and “address increasing awareness and understanding of both antisemitism and Jewish American heritage.”

AMC Theaters to Screen ‘Black Ice,’ Documentary That Unthaws Hidden History of Racism Against Black Hockey Players (EXCLUSIVE)

In a sport where only around 5% of professional players are Black, the documentary will give insight into the relationship between the NHL and athletes of color. “Black Ice” is directed by Hubert Davis and is executive produced by LeBron James, Maverick Carter, Drake and Future. The film premiered at the 2022 Toronto International Film Festival where it was the People’s Choice documentary winner. “Black Ice” will make its U.S. debut in AMC theaters starting July 14.

Vanessa Feltz has recalled the horrifying moment when Rolf Harris groped her on live television.The TV presenter, now 61, interviewed the disgraced entertainer back in 1996 for Channel 4's The Big Breakfast Show, while he was at the height of his fame, and has since revealed how he groped her just one foot away from his wife. Rolf, whose death was announced today (May 23), was convicted of a string of indecent assaults in June 2014. Vanessa, who previously opened up about the assault back in 2014, recalled the terrifying experience on her TalkTV Drivetime show, where she shared a photo of the interview.
