A review into HS2 will be launched by Labour if the party is elected next year, the shadow Chancellor has said. Rachel Reeves used her final Labour conference speech before the election next year to address the now-cancelled rail project, saying shadow transport minister Louise Haigh will kick-start an independent inquiry into the scheme.
Last week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak confirmed, after weeks of speculation, that the leg of the high speed line from Birmingham to Manchester was being scrapped.
In its place will be a new Network North, funded by £36 billion in savings from cancelling the project, according to the government.
Labour has also said it is unable to commit to resurrecting the line, because land purchased for the railway is set to be sold off by the government.
