King Robert the Bruce sculptures to be erected in Ayrshire as part of new trail

Two galvanised steel sculptures, to help visitors and tourists understand the history of King Robert the Bruce and his links to Ayrshire, are in the pipeline.One sculpture depicts a pair of axes mounted on a concrete base and the other represents the spider, which according to legend, inspired Bruce to ‘try again’ in a bid to regain his kingdom.It is hoped that both installations can be part of the Bruce’s Web Interactive Art Trail.Ayrshire Live can reveal that a total of eight sculptures relating to King Robert the Bruce are planned for the Carrick areas.Robert the Bruce was born on July 11, 1274 at Turnberry Castle and this year represents the 750th anniversary of his birth.As a result, special events are being planned locally to help mark the occasion.In terms of the steel sculptures, a planning application has been submitted to South Ayrshire Council, seeking permission for the installations.If approved, the axes sculpture, approximately 90cm in height and 70cm in breadth, mounted on a concrete base, would be sited on Recreation Ground at Kirkmichael Road, Straiton.The spider sculpture - complete with a crown - and approximately 1m in height and 1m wide, also mounted on a concrete base, would be sited on open space at the Community Garden, adjacent to Bolestyle Road and B7045, near to Kirkmichael Primary School.The applicant in the bid is Stuart Lindsay, from the North Carrick Community Benefit Company, set up in 2014 to serve the communities of Crosshill, Straiton, Kirkmichael, Kirkoswald, Maidens, Turnberry, Dunure, Minishant and Maybole.In planning papers the group says the scheme aims to “celebrate Robert the Bruce’s association with North Carrick and add to the tourist offer.”In a supporting statement they said:
