Katheryn Elizabeth Hudson (born October 25, 1984), known professionally as Katy Perry, is an American singer, songwriter, and television judge. After singing in church during her childhood, she pursued a career in gospel music as a teenager.
Perry signed with Red Hill Records and released her debut studio album Katy Hudson under her birth name in 2001, which was commercially unsuccessful. She moved to Los Angeles the following year to venture into secular music after Red Hill ceased operations and she subsequently began working with producers Glen Ballard, Dr. Luke, and Max Martin.
After adopting the stage name Katy Perry and being dropped by The Island Def Jam Music Group and Columbia Records, she signed a recording contract with Capitol Records in April 2007.

The ‘Roar’ singer came under fire when fans noticed Dr Luke was listed as a co-producer on her recent single ‘Woman’s World’.The producer was accused of emotional abuse and sexual assault in a decade-long lawsuit by Kesha.Perry has previously collaborated with the producer on some of her biggest hits, including ‘I Kissed A Girl’, ‘California Gurls’ and ‘Dark Horse’, but the news proved controversial following his and Kesha’s long-running legal battle.After Kesha sued him, the producer denied the allegations and countersued the artist, claiming she had breached the recording contract they had with one another and made up rape allegations in an attempt to get out of the deal.Kesha and Dr Luke’s legal battle came to an end last summer with the pair settling just one month.
