Humza Yousaf 'probably wouldn't' keep his British citizenship if Scotland becomes independent

Humza Yousaf would "probably" ditch his British citizenship if Scotland voted for independence in the future, he said today.The First Minister was speaking in Edinburgh as he launched his government's latest paper on the benefits of ending the Union.People already living in Scotland in the event of independence would automatically be granted Scottish citizenship under the plans.But Scots would also be given the choice to retain their British citizenship.Yousaf accepted that some in Scotland "will feel strongly" about retaining a link with the rest of the UK.He said Scotland would follow a similar model in awarding citizenship to that already used in Ireland.The SNP leader said such a system would help grow Scotland's working-age population and boost the economy as a result.Asked about how many people may choose to opt-out of British citizenship, Yousaf said: "It's important to recognise that some people will feel strongly about retaining their British citizenship, and we should give them the option to do so."Being a dual national is the norm in many, many countries across the world.
