Heather Brooke Armstrong, the writer known as “Dooce,” has passed away. The social media star, who gained notoriety in the early days of blogging, died Tuesday (May 9) at the age of 47, her family confirmed on her social media one day later.

Her boyfriend, Pete Ashdown, told the Associated Press she died by suicide. “She had a relapse recently and that’s what really spiraled her down.

She was sober for over 18 months, then started to sneak back into it. And then in the last month she went full tilt,” he explained. Heather chronicled her struggles with severe depression and alcoholism. “Early sobriety resembles living life as a clam without its shell,” she wrote in one of her final posts. “Heather Brooke Hamilton aka Heather B.
