Patrick Frater Asia Bureau Chief French pay-TV giant Canal+ is to take a significant minority stake in successful Asian streaming firm Viu.

It could end up becoming its majority owner. Viu, a start-up backed by Hong Kong’s PCCW, currently operates with a fremium model in 16 territories in Asia and the Middle East.

It said that it is hatching a “strategic partnership” with Canal+ in Asia, the Middle East and Africa. Canal+ is to pay $200 million for a 26.1% stake in Viu and will make a total staggered investment of $300 million.

We’re now doing the same in the US and the UK.“We believe our entry prices in these countries – $6.99 in the US, £4.99 in the UK and $5.99 in Canada – provide great value to consumers given the breadth and quality of our catalogue.”With the removal of the basic ad-free plan, Netflix now offers three subscription tiers; the £4.99/$6.99 per month ad-supported plan, the £10.99/£15.49 ad-free standard plan, and the £15.99/$19.99 per month premium tier which supports improved video quality.In the same report, Netflix said it saw the addition of 5.9million subscribers globally since March, following the streaming service’s crackdown on password sharing between households.

Requiring headsets and using a physical space of some 300 square metres, the set-up stimulates the physical experience of high winds, waterfalls and explosions. IQiyi described the project as “the first attempt in the VR industry to integrate different elements from immersive theatre, VR, and original IP,” and said that it leverages “inside-out tracking” technology and other industry-leading, sensory-simulation techniques to build in cars, boats, carriages, and other props. “The upshot is a highly realistic environment that fully immerses the audience in the story,” the company said.
