In light of Gynaecological Cancer Awareness Month this September, charities are joining together in order to raise awareness of the disease and the symptoms to look out for. There are five main types of gynaecological cancer – cervical, ovarian, vaginal, vulvar and uterine (or womb) - as well as fallopian tube cancer, however this form is very rare.Across the UK around 22,000 women are diagnosed with the disease every year, with 21 dying each day, according to figures from charity The Eve Appeal.
The devastating statistics highlight the need for greater awareness, with some deaths preventable if the cancer is caught early and the right treatment is given quickly.
With early detection, many gynaecological cancers have high survival rates. To help you learn a little about the symptoms of these cancers and the potential treatment, experts have shared the answers to some key questions, reports Wales Online. “The symptoms of gynaecological cancers can vary,” says gynaecologist Oudai Ali from New Victoria Hospital. “But some common signs to watch out for include abnormal vaginal bleeding, pelvic pain or discomfort, unusual vaginal discharge, new vulval lump or ulcer and changes in urinary or bowel habits.”If you experience any of these symptoms you should follow the "if in doubt, check it out rule" and book an appointment with your GP.
The expert added: “It’s crucial for patients to consult their GP if they experience any of these symptoms, as early detection can significantly improve treatment outcomes.” Feeling full very quickly after eating little as well as severe bloating, unintentional weight loss and fatigue may also be red flags.
