Family of carer stabbed to death by resident say killer is "danger to staff" at medium risk facility

The family of a carer who was stabbed to death by a disturbed resident say her killer is a "danger to staff" at a medium risk facility in Wales.

Michelle Rutherford, 54, was killed at Craighall Court in Stirling in March last year. The mother was stabbed to death in the supported accommodation by resident Kellyanne McNaughton.McNaughton, 33, was originally charged with murder but in January this year, prosecutors accepted a plea to the lesser charge of culpable homicide.

She was deemed as "high-risk" but sentencing was delayed several times due to problems finding a secure hospital to accommodate her.The Rutherford family, who previously called for a female state hospital in Scotland, say McNaughton should be kept in a high-secure unit to make sure she cannot harm again.Michele’s husband, William, told BBC Scotland News sending McNaughton to the medium-risk facility in Wales was "just endangering staff".He said: “They’ve categorised these people for a reason.

To me, if you’ve got a high-risk person they go into a high-risk facility – that facility is geared up to deal with that person."Why are you putting a high-risk person into a medium-risk facility that’s maybe not geared up for them, the staff isn’t trained to the right levels."Her daughter Amy said: “We don’t particularly care about that individual.
