Exhausted families arriving back in Manchester from Rhodes have told of the horrific scenes that left their holidays in tatters, with some fleeing their hotels with just their passports and others forced to endure nights on a school floor with complete strangers.

Repatriation flights landed in the UK overnight and on Tuesday (July 25) as holidaymakers spoke of their traumatic experiences being evacuated from hotels and sleeping in schools, airports and conference rooms on the island.

As many as 10,000 Britons are estimated to be in Rhodes, the Foreign Office said, with holiday operators continuing to cancel flights and holidays, leaving thousands with their getaways scuppered due to the fires. JP Carroll and Carol Nolan, from Dublin, were forced to sleep in a school and a conference room with complete strangers after missing their flight home on Saturday, and spoke of how residents in Rhodes saw their homes burn down.

They had to rebook a different flight to Manchester after the hotel they had been staying at, in Pefkos, was evacuated, with families walking down the road with their bags in unbearable temperatures over 40C.
