It will go down as one of the most poignant and triumphant sporting images in history – Eilish McColgan draped in a Saltire and flinging her arms round her mum after winning Commonwealth gold. Not only had she emulated Liz’s 10,000-metres wins in the 1986 and 1990 Games, she had also broken her mother’s record that had stood for 32 years. That spellbinding moment is captured in new documentary Eilish McColgan: Running in the Family, which tracks the athlete as she follows the footsteps of her legendary mum.Eilish has broken every track record her mother – and coach – has held except the marathon and she has admits she hopes to do that too.

But that “golden” moment in Birmingham last summer, she admits, will be imprinted on her heart forever. The 33-year-old Dundee University graduate said: “I will never forget the roar of the crowd as I crossed the finish line.

It took a minute to sink in and then all I wanted to do to was get to my mum in the stands and give her a big hug. I had done it and she was there to see it.

It was very special.“Before when I had won medals she wasn’t there and I would be desperate to phone her and tell her the news but that night she was in the stadium along with my dad and my partner Michael.“To be able to run to them and share my joy was one of the best feelings.
