Coronation Street star William Roache has been given a deadline to settle his tax debt, the High Court has heard, after it was revealed he was facing bankruptcy after HM Revenue & Customs (HMRC) filed a petition against him.
The actor is famed for playing Ken Barlow in the ITV soap having played the role since the programme's inception in 1960. Fast forward six decades and the acting legend is still appearing in Corrie as the Barlow patriarch and is soon set to celebrate his 92nd birthday in April.
While HMRC said it does not comment on individual cases, the Mirror reported at the end of January that despite being thought to be one of the highest-paid members of the cast, earning around £250,000 a year, Bill was facing bankruptcy for a second time. Jacquille Jarrett, for HMRC, said Mr Roache had asked for a 12-week adjournment, which was unopposed, to “allow for the sale of property”.
