A cheap and widely available antidepressant has shown to be “unexpectedly effective” in treating aggressive brain tumours, scientists have said.
Vortioxetine is recommended by the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (Nice) for adults who have major depressive episodes.
But lab tests on cancer cells have shown it was “unexpectedly effective” in treating glioblastomas – the most common and fast-growing type of brain tumour, the researchers said.
Further tests on mice showed vortioxetine has “good efficacy”, especially in combination with standard treatment such as surgery, chemotherapy and radiation, they added.
