Charity champ Khalid Raza is named our Scotland's Champion of 2023

Superhero Khalid Raza has changed the lives of more than 24,000 disabled people across the world by gifting them mobility and independence.Thanks to his charity Wheels to Heal discarded wheelchairs and walking aids are being repurposed and given to those who need them most.For the past eight years Khalid and his team have been rescuing wheelchairs from landfill and donating them to vulnerable people both here in the UK and in war ravaged countries around the globe.Entirely volunteer-led, the charity have transformed the lives of disabled people in Bangladesh, Iraq, Lebanon, Pakistan, Palestine, Afghanistan, Malawi, Somalia, Syria and Yemen.Selfless Khalid, 54, from Glasgow, who was named overall Scotland’s Champion of 2023 at our glittering people’s Oscars last night, said: “I set up Wheels to Heal in 2015 after discovering 150 wheelchairs destined for the scrap.

I was horrified knowing there were so many people who could make use of them.“We offer a collection service across mainland UK and an uplift service allowing more than 500 care homes as well as individuals to donate mobility aids.”Khalid, who also won the Making A Difference category, added: “I am honoured to accept this award on behalf of the charity as it is testimony that the small actions of a grassroots group of volunteers can make a big impact on a global level.“At home here in the UK we have created an emotional legacy for thousands of equipment donors and overseas we are giving the gift of mobility and dignity to disabled people - allowing them to access education, employment and to fulfill their dreams.
