Caledonia Gladiators’ first foray into Europe ended in disappointment on Sunday as they lost 57-51 in their Basketball Champions League qualifier in Turkey. The East Kilbride club saw a lead slip away as opponents Fribourg Olympic progressed, and Gladiators will now drop down to the FIBA Europe Cup for six games. While disappointed to lose in Antalya, head coach Gareth Murray was proud that they had reached that stage of European competition.

Murray, from Rutherglen, said: “I thought it was a good experience for us, it showed us a different style of basketball again that we’re trying to get used to, playing in Europe. “We’re obviously disappointed that we didn’t win the game. “We were very good, had a lead, and then they fought back and took the game in the end.

But overall it was a good experience.“We had a good start but slowed down scoring, and they made a couple of shots at the end that gave them a bit more momentum.“We just couldn’t score the ball enough, 30 points in 30 minutes, which wasn’t good enough to win the game.

It’s an historic occasion, it was good, and we’d like to have stayed longer, because there are a lot more teams who are playing over the coming week.“But it was a good experience, it was the first time for the club to be in Europe, which is great for the ambition of where the want to be.“Now, we drop down to the FIBA Europe Cup, that will give us six more games in a different competition, so that will be three at home and three away through October and November.“It was a good opportunity for us.
