A teenage boy accused of murder admitted stabbing a 17-year-old but claimed he was trying to 'diffuse' a fight. The 16-year-old defendant, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is on trial after being charged following the death of Kyle Hackland.

The 16-year-old, Yousef Sesay, 18, Lewis Ludford, also 18, and a 17-year-old boy are all standing trial at Manchester Crown Court, and have pleaded not guilty to murder.

Mr Hackland, 17, was stabbed four times on Southlea Road in Withington at about 11.30am on November 22 last year. The 16-year-old admitted stabbing Mr Hackland once but claimed he was acting in self defence and to protect Mr Ludford, wrongly believing that Mr Hackland had a weapon.

Giving evidence for the first time at the trial, the defendant said he and his three co-defendants, who he described as being his friends, had arranged to buy some cannabis at a location in Withington the day before Mr Hackland was fatally attacked.
