An aspiring doctor who was detained in a psychiatric hospital five hours from her family home 'cried out for help' and was 'massively failed by the system' before her death, her grieving mum told an inquest.

Lauren Bridges, 20, was found unconscious in an en-suite bathroom at the Priory's Cheadle Royal Hospital on February 24 2022.

She was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital suffering a cardiac arrest and later placed on life support, which was withdrawn and she died two days later.

An inquest began at South Manchester Coroner's Court before Assistant Coroner Mr Andrew Bridgman on Monday (August 7) before a jury and is expected to last up to four weeks. Lauren, who was originally from Bournemouth, in Dorset, had been detained under the mental health act and transferred to the privately-run hospital in Stockport in July 2021.
