Scottish Labour leader Anas Sarwar has said he will support a freeze on council tax if it is properly funded by the SNP-led Government.Sarwar said he would always backs measures to keep bills low, but not if it meant job losses and service cuts.Labour believes its thumping win over the SNP at the Rutherglen and Hamilton West by-election was partly down to opposition to proposed council tax rises.First Minister Humza Yousaf was consulting on rises of up to 22.5 per cent for people in larger houses and the SNP privately admits it was a vote loser.Yousaf then performed a huge u-turn at SNP conference by backing a council tax freeze for everyone.Attention has turned to how the national freeze will be funded, with councils fearing they will be short-changedSpeaking to the Record, Sarwar said of the freeze: "Labour will always support measures to help reduce people's bills.

We also have to accept that if it is not a funded council tax freeze, many of the services that the poorest people in our community rely on the most will be the ones that are cut.”Get the latest news sent straight to your messages by joining our WhatsApp community today. You'll receive daily updates on breaking news as well as the top headlines across Scotland. No one will be able to see who is signed up and no one can send messages except the Daily Record team. All you have to do is click here if you're on mobile, select 'Join Community' and you're in!If you're on a desktop, simply scan the QR code above with your phone and click 'Join Community'.We also treat our community members to special offers, promotions, and adverts from us and our partners.
