Delighted Rhys McCabe says Airdrie showed their ruthless side as they thumped East Kilbride 8-0 in the Premier Sports Cup last night.Lewis McGregor and Ben Wilson both hit hat-tricks against the Lowland League champions as the Diamonds sparkled in their Group A opener to take full points, and in some style.Wilson, a summer signing from Cliftonville, netted from the spot inside two minutes and McGregor doubled their lead seven minutes later.Wilson bagged number three midway through the half, before fellow new boy Rhys Armstrong curled home a fourth.Wilson completed his hat-trick before the half was out, and Mason Hancock slammed home a sixth before the interval.McGregor notched a quick double early in the second half to complete the scoring.Boss Rhys McCabe told the club’s website: “we’re getting stronger and stronger in each session, and we’re starting to see that ruthless side in front of goal.“It would have been easy to take your foot off the gas when you’re comfortably ahead at half-time, and we managed to get the luxury of bringing five subs on at 60 minutes, which is pleasing.“We had hoped to get off to a good start, and the scoreline and the manner in which we win the game is obviously really pleasing.“But there were loads of things I saw in the game and I stressed to the boys at half-time that we can work on and get better at,“There are loads of things to be chuffed about and loads that we can build on, so I’m really happy.”East Kilbride didn’t have a happy evening in North Lanarkshire, but McCabe said they showed flashes of promise.He said: “In fairness to East Kilbride I think there was loads of things to like about them, in terms of their play, and I think you could see the difference in the levels.“But in
