According to the charity Electrical Safety First, electric blanket fires increased by 38 per cent in 2023 compared to the previous year.
The latest government figures showed there were 29 incidents in England last year, compared with 21 the previous year, with one in three of these involving either a fatality or casualty.
The majority of electric blanket fires - more than 80 per cent - were linked to faults, according to the analysis. The charity has now issue a warning after raising concerns that older blankets could be going unchecked after years of use.
