Fire service staff are carrying out building safety inspections without adequate training, it is claimed. A source told the Manchester Evening News there is serious concern in Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service's (GMFRS) protection department.
They claim staff morale is at 'an all time low' in the department, which has bases across the region - including in Bolton and Stretford, an HQ in Pendlebury, Salford - and around 40 staff.
GMFRS chiefs said they 'firmly reject' claims inspections do not meet standards set by national guidelines. They added that after talks with staff, a new training suite; an increase in the number of inspection staff; refresher training; and improvement of policies and guidance around site-specific risks are being implemented. Newly-appointed GMFRS director of prevention and protection Carlos Meakin has been tasked with tackling the issues in the department.
