Vicky McClure told fans she was 'proud' of her roots after going on an emotional discovery of her ancestry in the new series of Who Do You Think You Are?

The actress is among several stars to have taken part in the new run of the BBC One programme in which well-known people trace their family tree, often travelling to different areas and other countries to follow in their ancestors' footsteps.

As for Vicky, the Line of Duty star uncovered the 'horrific' experiences her great-grandfather faced in a Japanese prisoner of war camp in Taiwan and also delved into the reason why her grandmother Jean was abandoned as a child and suffered a tough childhood with abusive foster parents. Harry had previously worked as a coal miner in Yorkshire from the age of 14, spending 18 years toiling underground and handling the crucial task of shifting supports that kept the mining tunnels stable.
