Crime writer Val McDermid has dedicated her latest novel to the “heroic” female players who quit Raith Rovers FC after the club signed David Goodwillie.
The team, captained by Tyler Rattray, cut all ties with the Kirkcaldy outfit last year after they signed the ex-Scotland striker who in 2017 was ruled by a civil court to be a rapist.
Club sponsor McDermid withdrew her support as a result of the signing. As the row raged, McDermid said she would only sponsor the womens and girls’ teams, which changed their name to McDermid Ladies FC and said they would find a new location to play home games.
Raith later released Goodwillie and apologised over the signing.A dedication in McDermid’s new Karen Pirie novel, Past Lying, reads: “For McDermid Ladies FC – every one a hero.”The Fife-born author, whose books have sold more than 19million copies, said: “These are a bunch of nice young lassies who took a very strong stand and I’ve got tremendous respect for them.
