Uddingston station accessible bridge lifts open to passengers

Passengers at a Lanarkshire railway station have welcomed its new step-free access following the opening of the new lifts for its recently-installed accessible bridge.The first visitors were able to use the lifts at Uddingston station this week after completing of the nine-month construction project plus final inspectiions by fire service representatives and staff from Network Rail and Scotrail.Little Aurelia Owens, aged just 12 weeks, was the first to try it out in her pram, along with mum Kirsty and gran Mary Bright; while volunteers from Grow Uddingston are busy replanting the station’s flower beds following the work.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

Kirsty said: “As a mum with a double pram, I was happy to see the lift was spacious inside. The installation makes it more accessible to many including myself whilst travelling with the pram.”An official opening event is planned for later this month to mark completion of the 75-tonne new bridge, which included use of a landmark 230-tonne crane to lift the bridge deck superstructure
